I volunteer at a local farm sanctuary, providing reiki to the animals. This sanctuary is home to a variety of creatures who come to live out their days in a safe and nurturing environment. While some animals are quite timid and cautious around humans, others eagerly seek interaction and lean into it.
One chilly winter day, I arrived at the farm and headed to the barn, my usual starting point. The horses and donkeys often gather there to eat and find shelter from the harsh weather. On this particularly blustery day, I greeted two mares in adjacent stalls, noticing how quickly my hands were getting cold. This was a concern, as I typically remain still during my sessions; it’s movement that keeps you warm in winter! Unfortunately, I had forgotten my hand warmers, which I usually tuck into my gloves for extra heat.
The two horses stood nose to nose, eager for reiki. I silently spoke, “Spirit, if you could keep my hands warm so I can continue this important work, that’d be great!” The sanctuary brings me immense joy, and I love offering reiki to those who need it. However, winter can be challenging with the cold, and I truly wanted to be there for the animals.
Just then, I heard a familiar meow from one of the barn cats. Looking down, I saw little Kiwi, an especially friendly Russian Blue who greets me every time I visit. He is the sweetest little cat. When I first arrived, he was preoccupied with his food, but now that his belly was full, I scooped him up. He nestled against my chest, resting all four paws in my hands, leaving one hand free to extend toward the two mares in hopes they would remain close.
The best part of holding Kiwi? He warmed my hands! He started profusely purring. (The frequency of purring is healing in itself.) Meanwhile, the two mares continued to nuzzle each other and Kiwi as I shared reiki with all three of them. It was a beautiful triangle of love—magic!
I asked for help, and it arrived. I have many stories from my work with animals, and they show their gratitude for the support and care I provide. It’s truly the most fulfilling experience to work with them.
I hope you, too, can find the magic in everyday life. It’s all around us!
