What a Yellow Dog Wants

Our dog Walt is having some mobility issues because of the onset of degenerative myelopathy. This neurological condition causes him to be unsteady on his back legs. He struggles with standing up from a sitting position, going up and down stairs, and walking on slippery floors. It will eventually lead to other symptoms like incontinence and trouble eating. We’ve been working with him to strengthen his back legs, while he has the ability to do so. (Exercises, walking and acupuncture) He is experiencing some atrophy in those legs. Walt has recently started wearing a harness because, at 115 pounds, he’s too heavy to lift if he falls.

I give him reiki as a supplement to everything we do to keep him strong. What is reiki?

According to The International Center for Reiki Training:

“Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.”

Walt loves reiki! He settles in and falls asleep while I go through all the chakras, using hand movements, including positive affirmations, and providing comfort. In my most recent reiki session, I decided to communicate with him telepathically.

Me: Is there anything we can do for you?

Walt: I want to be around more people.

Me: What about dogs? Don’t you like Moab? (Neighbor dog who shares fence line.)

Walt: Yeah…

Me: What about Ellie? Do you like Ellie? (Another neighbor dog that shares fence line.)

Walt: Yeah…

Me: Ok, let me see what we can do.

Walt typically does like being around people. He’s friendly and loving. Dogs? Sure, he likes dogs. But, he likes people better. 😃

If you’re interested in animal reiki, please contact me. Reiki can be done in 30 minutes and from a distance, in the comfort of home. It works best when your furry friend is relaxed and comfortable, but they can still receive the benefits of reiki if they are alert. It’s $40 for 30 minutes of reiki, and then a phonecall or email to review what I found.
